Sleep eating

Sleep eating, sometimes called sleep related eating disorder, is a parasomnia event in which the subject awakens during sleeping hours, sometimes multiple times during one sleeping period, and eats or drinks, often excessively. The subject does this almost entirely unconsciously, and may have little to no memory of its occurrence.

Sleep eating, also known as nocturnal eating syndrome, is a sleep disorder in which a person eats while they are asleep. This can happen without the person being aware of it, and they may not remember eating in the morning. Sleep eating can be caused by a variety of factors, including sleep deprivation, certain medications, and alcohol use. It can also be a symptom of underlying medical conditions, such as sleep apnea or night terrors.

  • Keep a food and sleep diary. This can help you identify patterns and triggers for your sleep eating.

  • Avoid eating heavy meals and drinking alcohol before bed. Both can interfere with sleep and may increase the likelihood of sleep eating.

  • Avoid sleeping with food in your room. This can make it easier to eat while you are asleep.

  • Keep the kitchen clean and free of potentially dangerous foods or appliances.

  • Talk to your doctor. They can help determine the underlying cause of your sleep eating and recommend appropriate treatment.
