What is sleep apnea?
Sleep apnea is a sleep-related breathing disorder characterized by abnormal breathing patterns during sleep. People with sleep apnea repeatedly experience reductions or pauses in breathing, causing brief awakenings that reduce sleep quality, often without the sleeper being aware.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)
The most common type, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), occurs when the airway at the back of the throat becomes blocked, often causing snoring. This obstruction causes the sleeper to wake up, engage throat muscles, and take deep breaths, often accompanied by snorting or choking sounds. OSA affects 1 in 4 adults in Canada but often goes undiagnosed.
Central Sleep Apnea (CSA)
Central sleep apnea (CSA) involves a disruption in the communication between the brain and the muscles that control breathing, leading to shallower breaths and temporary pauses. CSA is less common, affecting less than 1% of people.
Treatment
Treatments include CPAP machines, oral appliances, and various sleep apnea therapies, which can be recommended post-test. Prescriptions are included in our home-based sleep testing if criteria is met.
