Dream sleep

Our dream sleep or REM sleep is vital to our well being. Dream sleep occurs towards the end of a 90 minute sleep cycle. It serves to restore our mental horsepower. Memory consolidate takes places during this sleep stage. If you have learnt something new at work or school, how much sleep you acquire that night and specifically how much dream sleep you acquire, impacts your ability to recall that information the next day.

There are several benefits to REM sleep, including:

  1. Learning and memory consolidation: REM sleep has been shown to play a role in the consolidation of new information and skills learned during the day.

  2. Emotional regulation: REM sleep has been linked to the regulation of emotions and the processing of emotional experiences.

  3. Mood regulation: People who get enough REM sleep tend to have better moods and overall psychological well-being.

  4. Physical health: REM sleep has been linked to a number of physical health benefits, including a stronger immune system and improved cardiovascular health.

  5. Brain development: REM sleep is important for the normal development of the brain, particularly in infants and young children.

Overall, getting enough REM sleep is important for both physical and mental health.
