How Much Sleep Do You Need?
The amount of sleep an individual needs can vary depending on their age, lifestyle, and individual needs. However, as a general guideline, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and the Sleep Research Society (SRS) recommend the following ranges of sleep duration for different age groups:
Infants (4-12 months): 12-16 hours
Toddlers (1-2 years): 11-14 hours
Preschoolers (3-5 years): 10-13 hours
School-age children (6-12 years): 9-12 hours
Teenagers (13-18 years): 8-10 hours
Adults (18+ years): 7 or more hours
It's important to note that the quality of sleep is just as important as the quantity of sleep. Adults who consistently get less than 7 hours of sleep per night may experience negative effects on their physical and mental health, including an increased risk of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, depression, and anxiety. Additionally, individuals who consistently feel tired during the day or have trouble falling or staying asleep may have a sleep disorder and should consider seeking medical attention.
